12/13/2010 - ARLINGTON, Va. (12/13/2010)  -- National Guard and Reserve members still have time to nominate their employers for the 2011 Secretary of Defense Employee Support Freedom Award, the Department of Defense's highest honor given to deserving employers who provide exceptional support for Guard and Reserve employees.

Employers can be nominated year round for the Patriot Award, which also gives recognition to them for providing outstanding support for their Guard and Reserve employees.

In September, it was announced that a spouse can nominate their own employer for the Patriot Award - for providing support by allowing them time off, helping out while a servicemember is deployed, etc. The Patriot Award is currently the only award available for the spouse's employer. This can be done by visiting:

Nominations for the Freedom Award may be submitted at through Jan. 17, 2011. The names of all nominated employers will be announced in the spring and the 15 Freedom Award recipients are expected to be announced in the beginning of summer.

Nearly one-half of the U.S. military is comprised of the Guard and Reserve, which makes employer support invaluable to the armed forces.
