100 miles, counting for Selfridge Airman

SELFRIDGE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Mich. --  A Selfridge Airman recently completed the Burning River 100-mile Endurance Run.

Staff Sgt. Lukas Fisher, a member of the 127th Wing Inspector General office, completed the race coordinated by Western Reserve Racing Aug. 3.

The run started in Cleveland, Ohio, Aug. 2 and ended in Akron, Ohio, the following day.

Fisher said he entered the race because he enjoys running and the challenges of it.

"I like to always improve on how far and how fast I can run," he said.

Fisher completed the race in 23 hours and 43 minutes ... almost a solid day of running, including running through the night hours, making it necessary to run with a headlamp and flashlight, according to Fisher. He endured the race without sleeping, and was on his feet competing the entire time.

The race organizers provided about 20 aid stations, located every five to eight miles, to provide runners with the appropriate nourishments. There were five stations in which Fisher supplied a personalized drop bag, which included shirts, socks, sunscreen, bug spray, band aids and batteries for his gear, to sustain him during the race.

There were about 500 participants, about half of whom completed the race. Fisher said was determined to complete the course.

"I reminded myself that I had already trained hundreds of hours and ran over 1,000 miles this year preparing for the race and the only way I would not finish would be if I was not physically able to run," he said.

His future aspirations, once he recovers from minor foot and shin injuries from the 100-miler, is to complete a marathon in 3 hours or less.

"I certainly have not given up running as I still enjoy it very much," Fisher said.

Fisher serves as a full-time member and has been with the Inspector General's office since that office was stood up earlier this year.
