Retired Army Lt. Gen. Herbert R. Temple Jr., shown at a ceremony renaming the Army National Guard headquarters building in his honor in Arlington, Virginia, Feb. 22, 2017, died Dec. 28, 2024. Temple enlisted in the California Army National Guard in 1947 and served as the chief of the National Guard Bureau from 1986 to 1990.
