New Jersey National Guard pioneers segregation’s end

Telegram sent from New Jersey Governor Alfred E. Driscoll to James V. Forrestal, Secretary of Defense on Dec. 16, 1947, asking: “Does the Army Department Policy prohibit mixed companies and similar units composed of both white and negro soldiers?” New Jersey had passed a new constitution in 1947 that ended segregation in the New Jersey National Guard. Army policy at the time prohibited racially mixed units. (New Jersey National Guard photo by Mark C. Olsen)
