Joe Foss 1943
After enlisted service as an artilleryman in the South Dakota National Guard From 1937 to 1940, Joe Foss entered the Marine Corps Reserve for aviation training. As a Marine, Foss achieved 26 victories in the Southwest Pacific and received the Medal of Honor, finishing the World War II as a major. After the war, Joe Foss helped start the South Dakota Air National Guard, rising to the rank of brigadier general and in 1955 winning election as governor of the state.
