WICHITA, KS -- Nine Airmen from the Kansas Air National Guard’s 184th Wing, stationed at McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas, were put on orders to support the state’s efforts to combat COVID. The Airmen supported the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and Sedgwick County agencies in response to January’s COVID-19 outbreak.

The Airmen operated a drive-thru testing center at the Wichita Transient Center in downtown Wichita where local residents could get free testing.

“It’s been good working with the Air National Guard,” said Yara Gonzalez, transient staff supervisor, Sedgwick County. “No problems at all. It’s been pretty fun actually.”

The Airmen provided instructions for self-administered saliva tests, operated data collection systems, and packaged and mailed hundreds of samples to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

“I am always amazed at the number of volunteers that step up during times of need, whether it’s at a national or state-level,” said Col. Jason Knobbe, commander, 184th Wing. “It truly makes me proud to serve with outstanding citizen-Soldiers and Airmen who put service before self.”
