Wisconsin Flood Relief Initial Awareness Assessment

Mission system operator Lt Col Tim Howell from the 186th Air Refueling Wing, Meridian, MS operates a console aboard an RC-26 aircraft specifically designed for viewing and transmitting high quality video and still imagery to military and civilian Operations Centers in real-time. This capability gives military commanders and civilian first responders a bird's eye view of significant events as they happen. Working with several state agencies along with the Wisconsin Air National Guard, the Mississippi Air National Guard RC-26 demonstrated the benefits of this new capability during an initial flood assessment mission in southern Wisconsin on June 10th, 2008. The crew of this RC-26 flew above the flood stricken region transmitting real-time imagery to the Wisconsin Joint Operations Center (JOC) and the Wisconsin Emergency Operations Center (WEOC) in addition to other agencies. This imagery was used to asses the integrity of several area Dams in addition to flood damage assessment in the hardest hit regions of the southern half of the state.

Exercise Capital Spear

Soldiers and Airmen of the Maryland National Guard's 32nd Weapons of Mass Destruction-Civil Support Team train aboard the USS Barry March 6 at the Washington Naval Yard during Exercise Capital Spear. Capital Spear included WMD-CSTs from Washington, Delaware, Maryland, Michigan, Virginia, West Virginia, and Indiana. The three-day exercise began March 4 with a multi-state response to simulated synchronized terrorist attacks around the nation's capital and northwest of Indianapolis. Officials said the purpose was to enhance the interoperability of the teams, which investigate sites for chemical, biological and radiological agents and advise civilian responders. If called upon, the teams would assist in requests for federal assets, but they said their main concern is saving lives and preventing human suffering and property damage. (Photo by Tech. Sgt. Air Guard pilots, maintainers make history in Iraq

A 438th Air Expeditionary Group weapons loading team prepares to mount a Joint Direct Attack Munition to an A-10C Thunderbolt II using an MJ-1 “jammer” vehicle here. The Airmen made history in Iraq when their upgraded A-10s successfully employed JDAMs in combat. Because the weapon is guided to targets by pinpoint GPS coordinates, experts here say it is 100 percent more accurate than munitions previously employed on the A-10C Thunderbolt II, dramatically improving precision and reducing fratricide. The Airmen are deployed from the 175th Wing, Maryland Air National Guard, located in Baltimore, Md. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech. Sgt. D. Clare)

The The
The "hole" problem

Senior Master Sgt. Randy Flores, left, and Lt. Col. Scott Porter examine a hole in a gravel road created by an inert 500-pound, concrete-filled practice bomb at Cannon Range near Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., June 19, 2007. Sergeant Flores is the range's superintendent and Colonel Porter is the range commander. Repairing roads at the range is common due to natural degredation and the ordnance that rains down from Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard and active-duty planes, which use the range for training. Both Airmen are members of the Missouri Air National Guard's 131st Fighter Wing, Detachment 1. (U.S. Air Force photo/Maj. David Kurle)
