Captain Russell “Rusty” Schweickart was the first astronaut with an Air Guard background, selected for astronaut training in October 1963 while serving as an F-86 pilot in the 101st Tactical Fighter Squadron, Massachusetts Air National Guard. In March 1969, Schwieckart was the Lunar Module Pilot on the Apollo 9 mission, which tested the Apollo moon-landing systems in low Earth orbit.

F-84Fs of the Federalized Air National Guard in Newfoundland, November 1961, prior to flying the Atlantic to Europe in response to the Berlin Crisis. Because of the long over-water distance to the next airfield in the Azores, the planes were towed to the end of the runway prior to takeoff to conserve fuel. During this Operation Stair Step deployment of more than 200 fighter aircraft (the largest overseas movement of a fighter force since World War II), not a single plane was lost. Capt Norma Parsons-Erb 1956
On 1 August 1956, Captain Norma Parsons became the first woman to join the Air National Guard when she was sworn in as a nurse in the 106th Tactical Hospital, New York Air National Guard. Two days earlier, Congress had enacted Public Law 845 allowing the participation of women in the Guard, albeit only as officers serving in nursing and other medical fields; women were not allowed to enlist until 1967. Before joining the Air Guard, Capt Parsons had served on active duty with the Army Air Force in the China-Burma-India Theater and as an Air Force nurse in-theater Korea during the conflict.

Joe Foss 1943
After enlisted service as an artilleryman in the South Dakota National Guard From 1937 to 1940, Joe Foss entered the Marine Corps Reserve for aviation training. As a Marine, Foss achieved 26 victories in the Southwest Pacific and received the Medal of Honor, finishing the World War II as a major. After the war, Joe Foss helped start the South Dakota Air National Guard, rising to the rank of brigadier general and in 1955 winning election as governor of the state.
