109th AW takes off for Antarctica 109th takes off to support 30th Operation Deep Freeze season
Two LC-130 aircrews, transporting supplies and equipment, began the first leg of a five-leg journey to McMurdo Station, Antarctica, to provide logistical support to the National Science Foundation. The primary mission of the New York Air National Guard's 109th AW is to provide airlift within Antarctica to support science research.

The New York Air National Guard’s 109th Airlift Wing completed its 24th operational mission to Summit Camp, Greenland, on July 30, and its 13th mission to the East Greenland Ice-core Project (East GRIP) on July 29, in support of the National Science Foundation since the season began in April.
